Permissible Measurements of Motor Cycle in India

The permissible measurements of each motor vehicle including two wheeler are regulated by the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989.The Central government  vide  Gazette Notification  GSR414( E)2020 amended  Rules 93,93 A,93 B,93 C  new rules are substituted. The Central Government made this amendment after publication of the Draft Rules in November 2019 and after perusing the Objection ,as laid in Sec  212 of th Motor Vehicle Act 1988.Any violation of these rules will attract legal actions including cancellation of Registration validity of the vehicles, initiated by MVD.

Measurements of Two Wheeler's

As per this amendment the permitted maximum length of a two Wheeler  is   4 meters.That means any  two wheeler made at a length higher than this measurement is illegal and will not be allowed.If such a vehicle is booked with proof the MVD will initiate cancellation of the Registration Certificate on the found of non compliance of Central Rules.The length will be measured as the distance between two vertical planes projecting from the front and rear extreme points of the Two Wheeler.

Permissible Width of Two Wheeler

As per the Amendment two category of width is stipulated for Motor Cycles,One is For L 1 category and other is for L2 category.

L1 and L2 Category

L1 means motor cycles with maximum speed is limited to 45 kmph and Engine Capacity not exceeding 50 CC in case of Internal Combustion Engine and motor power not exceeds 0.5 K watts if fitted with Electric Motor. L2 means two wheeler s above these limits.Permitted width for L1 category is 1 meter and for others it is 2 meters .It is the maximum permitted width.The procedure for measurement is the same as in the case of Length but the distance measured is width only,

Maximum permitted Height 

The Maximum Permitted Height of  all category of two wheedlers  is  2.5 meters.Any height beyond it will be illegal and  will attract Registration Cancellation procedure by the MVD.
