What will be the legal status of the insurance of your vehicle when you sell the vehicle to some one and make necessary changes in the Registration Certificate?
In such case the Certificate of Insurance and policy of insurance issued in respect of that vehicle will be deemed to have been transferred to the new owner. The Motor Vehicles Act further clarifiies that such tranfer means transfer of all rights as well as liabilities in respect of the particular Policy of Insurnace.
However it is the duty of the purchaser to apply before the concerned insurance company to make necessary changes in the insurance certificate as well as insurance policy, within Fourteen Days from date of transfer of ownership.
Hence after transfer of ownership of a vehicle the seller is absolutely free from all liabilities ,arising out of use of that vehicle ,even though the name stand unchanged. And the purchasers liability will be covered by the isurance policy and he is duty bound to effect change in ownership in the insurance certificate also.
