Now a days use of lights in a motor vehicle is not limited to night driving but some people view it as a luxury also.People spending lot of money for decoration of their vehicle with lights.Sometimes try to alter the original head lights with that of a luxury vehicle.Sometimes fit color lights without considering the legal backing of the same.
The Central motor Vehicles Act,1988 stipulate the need of lights a in a motor vehicle and also regulate the use of lights.The positioning of head lights ,design of reflectors,change in light beam when vehicle is loaded etc are vital features while designing a motor vehicle.Such regulations are Contained in the Automotive India Standards known as AIS standards.
All the light fittings ,its positioning ,light beams etc shall be in accordance with the AIS standards.The compliance of these standards are tested while design approval process of the vehicle as well as in the conformity test procedure conducted by testing agencies like ARAI,VRDO,CIRT etc.

Lights Allowed in a Motor Vehicle
All kind of lights allowed in a motor vehicles is enumerated in M V Act 1988, and Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989 .They are :- Head Light,Park light ,Passing Light ,Indicator Light, ( Allowed In front Side of Vehicles )
- Park Light Red ,Brake Light ,number plate lights ( In the Rear Side )
- Top lights for goods vehicles.
The Reflector,Bulbs and other devices attached to each lighting device shall be manufactured according to AIS standards only.
Further ,lights with white ,amber are only allowed to the front side of vehicle and lights with Red,White and Amber are only allowed to the rear side of a vehicle.The rear lights sahll be visibile with human eyes from a distance of 155 meter from the rear side of the vehicle.
VIP Lights
Lights with Red Top lights are limited to dignitiaries of the country.Wheras Blue is allowed to certain other class of known person .Flashing Blue ,Red,White lights are allowed for the use of Enforcement Agencis .No other person shall use a light with colour,other than permitted,not use on his vehicle.
Spot Lamp
Spot Lamps are normally not allowed in a motor vehicle.For exceptional use ,permission of the Registereing Aurhority ( R T O ) shall be obtained before further use.The Present Pracitize of All kind of Retro fitment of lighting system need to be stopped to save money .This rule is applicable to yellow lights fitted on vehicle plying at hill station ,during winter.
