Kochi water metro is the proposed Transportation integration project by Kochi Metro Rail Limited.The project is aimed to exploit the water connectivity of the city and distant location by providing high speed boat with modern facilities and comfort.The project was initially aimed to commission on November 2020 but delayed due to the Covid 19 impact.Intelligent Transportation Management Automatic fare collection methods etc are proposed facilities to be added to the infrastructure.
Lot of islands as well as remote places are now connected to the main land by road net works which is always congested.For Example The City area like Fort Kochi, Mattanchery and another important island Vypeen etc are connected with road network.These places were initially connected by water and boat services as well as jungar services were existing .When the road connectivity introduced people preferred road network than water net work.Reliability of service as well as time taken for travelling etc are the prime concern,The issue of last mile connectivity at the termini was also an issue.Now the KMRL devised a comprehensive plan to connect all these water network with main land Kochi City They are planning to introduce Boats that is capable to travel at a speed of 12 knots.The facilities in the boat are amazing,And the proposed boat terminals are like metro stations.
The proposed Water Metro Network integrated with Metro Rail as well as other mode of transport and availability of last mile connectivity at both ends,like cycling,E cart,Autos and providing walk able quality of foot paths etc all together is going to make a positive impact on the transportation net work of the city.They are cost effective too up to certain extent.
Development of Tourism Route
The city of Kochi is well surrounded by more than 10 -12 Islands.All these islands have water Connectivity to the City.All the islands are dwelling place for good number of peoples. The transportation issue for few islands like Mulavukadu ,Bolgatty etc were crucial .With the construction of Vypeen Bridges these islands are connected by road.
The Container Terminal Highway is built by filling the back waters .The road still have beautiful views of back waters.The water Metro Route connect majority of the islands even though they are connected by road network.
Back water boating is really a fantastic experience in kerala. The cool breeze while you standing in the boat will wash out all the tensions and depression at the moment.The effect is fantastic.Every one shall have experience of this wonderful moment.When the Water metro Network come in to reality it will not only act as a transport mode connecting other mode of transports but also will act as a tourist boating destination.People can simply relax a cool boating by paying the ticket expense ,as much times they want.They can visit all these island destinations by boat.They can prefer to stay at the home stays in these villages.
Hence the water metro will bring more fortunes to the city by means of tourism and transportation integration.One thing is clear.Boating in the back waters of Kochi will be remarkable even all time like other boating destinations in kerala.
