Registration Plate of your Car

The Registration plate of your vehicle is mandatory .Without a Registration plate containing the registration Mark you are not allowed to operate a vehicle at public place or keep vehicle in the state.That means exhibition of registration mark is always essential.

Sec 39 of the Motor Vehicles Act stipulate the need of registration of a motor vehicle as well as exhibition of registration Mark in the Prescribed manner.Sec 192 is the penal section for the Sec 39 Hence need of registration of a motor vehicle as well as exhibition of registration mark in the prescribed manner are equally important to  keep a motor vehicle for use any where in the country.

What is the prescribed Manner for exhibition of Registration Plate of your Car?

As per Central Motor Vehicles Rules 51 a private vehicle should have two number plates .One int he front and other in the rear. Apart from this for HSRP number Plates ,sticker type number plate also to be affixed in the front wind shield glass.For commercial vehicles additional number plates are coming on both side of the body.

The Number  registration plate of a two wheeler shall be exhibited to the FRONT and parallel to the Handle Bar.Earlier registration plates parallel to the axis of vehicle was prescribed but now it is not allowed.

The HSRP number  registration plate is mandatory now.It shall be provide by the dealer of the vehicle without any addition cost for the same.
The HSRP registration plates shall be permanently fasten using appropriate methods to prevent foul play.

Size of Registration  Plates and numbers

The size of  Registration plates  for Two Wheeler is   200  X 100  mm  and for Light Vehicles or Passenger cars it will be  340  X 200  mm or 500 X 120 mm.The required height of the digits in the registration plates ,for  both the front and rear,shall be 5 cm.For the ticker affixing on wind shield it is prescribed as 2.5 Cm.

Colour of  letters and Back ground

For private vehicles including two wheeler the  registration plate shall be written in Black letter on white back ground.For commercial or Transport Vehicle the Registration plates shall be written on black letter in yellow back ground.These are the common colour pattern of registration plates we are seeing.In addition to these ,number plate written on Green/White combination,Black yellow Combination and  with certain marks with different colors are visible on roads.

Special  Colour for Diplomatic Officers

Every vehicles  diplomatic Mission in Delhi shall exhibit registration plates in Deep Blue back ground with white Letters.

Every vehicles belongs to  Consular post in india shall have registration plates with yellow back ground and black Letters.
Used by  Non Diplomatic Officers

The colour of  registration plate for home based  non diplomatic officers of diplomatic mission in india is light Green back ground with White letters.


Green Number  registration plates for Electric Vehicles



The MoRTH has decided to introduce green back ground Registration plates for Electric Vehicles.The GoI has also decided to implement the green number plates for Electric Vehicles as a sign of its environment friendly usage,wef  1st May 2019.The number is written on white letters on green back ground.
