Over Speed :Chennai Doctor need to Pay 21 Lakhs


Over speed is thrilling  but will  drain you wallet especially if you are enjoying the thrill of speed in Vadkkumchery -Walayar Stretch of National Highway 544 in Kerala.
As per reports a Chennai based Doctor was booked for Over speed for more than 1400 times.That means If the accused person is opted to compound the offence   he is liable to pay Rs 21,00,000 /-          ( Twenty One Lakhs) as fine.Other wise  he will be compelled to face prosecution and  disqualification of Driving License under various provisions of Motor Vehicles Act and Rules. The Most funny thing is that the vehicle,a Hyundai Creta , which breached the speed limits 1400 times cost around 15 Lakhs only whereas the fine amount will be 21 Lakhs.

Speed Limit in National Highways

As per the Sec 112  Motor Vehicles Act 1988 ,driving a motor vehicle at excess speed than permitted is an offence.The  authority to fix speed limit is vested with the Central government only.The central government will fix the speed limit time to time and  publish the same in official gazette and the speed limit becomes binding. Different speed limit is fixed for different category of vehicles.Over speeding is an offence under Sec 183 MV Act.Allowed maxumum speed in highways in kerla is 100 kmph.

Maximum speed allowed

The maximum speed limit allowed for Light vehicles is 100 Kmph in National Highways without  access restriction. Speed above the limit will be treated as an offence.

Automated Enforcement System

The State of Kerala has implemented Automated Enforcement System way back in 2015 mainly to book over speed offences of vehicles.For this purpose Speed Measuring Cameras are installed at several part of the road Network ,which is monitored by the  Motor Vehicles Department and Kerala Police The MVD has installed two control rooms and police installed one control room for the monitoring of vehicles.

Various Punishments for Over Speed under Motor Vehicles Act

Over speeding is a threat to road safety and the authorities are always behind the drivers to catch them on the spot.They are using Hand Held Radar units to measure speed,Now shifted to Automated Enforcement systems.
Fine :The punishments For Over speed are regulated by the Motor Vehicles Act.As per the act over speeding attracts a compounding fees,Rs 1500 /- for Light Vehicles and  3000 /- for other Vehicles.
Disqualification Of Driving License : The Licensing Authority as well as the Competent Court can Disqualify the driver from driving any vehicle for the offence of over speed ,The period of Disqualification is the discretionary power of the authorities.
