Validity of Driving Licenses






The Validity of Indian Union Driving License has been modified by the  Motor Vehicles Amendment Act 2019,passed by the union parliament in 2019.

Section 14 of the amended Act  specify the  validity of driving License issued  or renewed in India, after the commencement of the act in this year.

There are basically Two category of  vehicles existing in India, Transport vehicles and Non Transport Vehicles. 

Transport Vehicle is  normally used for hire or reward and all public service vehicle are Transport Service Vehicles. 

On the other hand a Non Transport Vehicle is used for Private purpose. Two wheeler Private  motor Cars etc are  falling under this category of vehicles.

The License held by a person naturally have two validity ,one for Non Transport Vehicle and other for Transport Vehicles.

To Drive Transport  Vehicles class ,authorization for driving Transport Vehicles is required.

It is also called as Badge  Licenses.

In the Light of Latest Judgment of Supreme Court, to drive Transport Vehicle Category  up to 7500 Kg Gross Weight, Authorization to Drive Transport Vehicle or Badge is not required.

In simple words, a holder of  non transport Vehicles License can drive Not Only  private Vehicles but also goods vehicles, Taxis, Three Wheelers  provided he attain age of 20 years.



Validity of License to Drive  a Transport Vehicle

As per Section 14 (2) a ,The currency or Validity of  a License to drive a Transport Vehicles  shall be effective for a period of  Five Years.But in the case of vehicle carrying Dangerous subjects or Hazardous goods It shall be for a period of  Three years only.
Eg : If the Date of issue or Renewal  is 01/01/2020   : The Validity 31/12/2024

Validity of License to Drive Non Transport ( Private Vehicles )

There are Four Categories of Validity Span for the Driving License of non Transport vehicles ;

Category  I (Below Age 30 years)
  • If the holder ,at the time of issue or renewal,has not attained the age of  30 years,it shall be valid  up to the age of 40 years,
  • Illustration   :
    • Date of  Issue  is 01/01/2020  ,
    • Date of birth :10/10/2020  ( aged  20),
    • Validity : 09/10/2040 ( up to the age of  40 years)

Category  II   ( Age  between 30 - 50 years)
  • If the holder ,at the time of issue or renewal,has  attained the age of  30 years, but not attained age of  50 Years it shall be valid  for a period of 10 years from the date of renewal,
  • Illustration   :   Date of  Issue  is 01/01/2020  , ( aged  31),
    • Validity : 31/12/2029 ( 10 years,age not relevant)
Category  III   ( Age  between  50 - 55years)
  • If the holder ,at the time of issue or renewal,has  attained the age of  50 years, but not attained age of  55 Years it shall be valid  up to age of  60 Years
  • Illustration   :  
    •  Date of  Issue  is 01/01/2020 , 
    • Date of birth 10/10/1969, aged  51,
    • Validity : 09/10/2029 ( up to the  age of  60 years)
Category  IV   ( Age   attained  55years)
  • If the holder ,at the time of issue or renewal,has  attained the age of  55 years,  it shall be valid  for a period of 05 years from the date of renewal.
    llustration   : 
    • Date of  Issue  is 01/01/2020  ,
    • Date of birth :10/10/1963  ( aged  57),
    • Validity : 31/12/2024 ( for 5 Years)
