Car parking is indeed a business, but not in organized manner in India.
Parking of vehicles ,especially cars in cities is getting more complicated due to lack of space and increased number of vehicles at the unchanged or diminishing infrastructure. It is not a local problem related to one city or town but a global issue.Lack of proper parking facilities may adversely affect the business as well as quality of life in that particular area.
Since the country is recording steady growth in the sale of Motor Car over years, more vehicles are coming out to road in each year.People belongs to low income group started to own small cars where middle income group own, multiple vehicles in single house hold. All these make vehicle population very high. But the infrastructure development especially parking space creation remain unchanged.Lot of private players are there in the market. But contribution by the Local Self Governments, are not that much creative. The space constraints will remain unchanged. But the authorities have to develop plan for effective utilization of the space as well as regulating traffic flows.
According to studies ,around 35 to 40 Percentage of road, including the bitumen surface ,are illegally occupied by vehicle owners for parking their vehicle, either short time or till end of the day, even in the National Highways also..This not only produce road congestion but also lead to accidents and increased travel time.

The parking market is growing globally at a rate 12.10 % annum as per an article found in the internet and the report further says that parking market size in India is worth 2000 Cr ,per year in which only 15 % falls to organized sector. The authenticity of the report need to be verified .But one thing is true the parking market size in India is growing at a good pace. The role of government or LSG is very limited in the present scenario ,despite that fact that they have sufficient land in the city centers. The scarcity of suitable land is an issue for developing parking yard. But changing technology can be successfully introduced to this area. The LSG or Government can set up multi level parking complex in the available space. It may on the yard of Government office or Court complex or open space.By providing parking tower more vehicles can be accommodated and more revenue will be generated.
The defect of parking industry in India is it devoid of any modern technology,it still using conventional receipt for payment method.
The industry have developed so much and obviously investment also required.
Need for Strict Law enforcement
The general attitude of majority of car owners is that why should i pay for parking the vehicle. Instead they prefer curb end, roads, market place even in front of hospitals, blocking free flow of traffic. The reason behind this behavior pattern is lack of strict rules relating to parking of vehicles. As per Motor Vehicles Act ,Parking in No Parking Area, mentioned in the Regulation is punishable with a Fine of Rs 100/-.In rare cases it attracts suspension of Driving License. But usually offenders are agree to compound the offence for Rs 100/--In several part of the country the politicians and Government Servants Breach the laws first followed by the land lords and common man.
Another reason for parking shortage is conversion of parking slots of vehicle in big apartments and commercial building as commercial shop, forcing the resident or occupant to park their vehicle in the public road.Supreme Court ,while delivering judgment in AIR 2010 SC,banned such conversion of parking slots to commercial area. But still the process is continuing in hidden manner.
Need of Sufficient Legislation

Need of Sufficient Legislation
- Enactment of stringent rules banning parking or abandoning of vehicles at public place will definitely end the issue.
- At present there is no government regulation for running of parking hubs. These hubs are vulnerable to fire like things as we seen in Bangalore. Hence adequate rules for running these establishments need to be incorporated.
- Government shall utilize its available land at prime location for parking facilities in BOT Model
- Automated parking facilities can be used
- Government shall co ordinate all parking centers and release an App to indicate the parking slot availability in a particular area,as available in Banglore.
